Stylus Functionality
Are stylus devices are supported in the Cambridge Reader app?
The Cambridge Reader app supports active styluses on compatible Android tablets (including
Samsung S Pen) and Apple Pencil on iPads. The app is optimized for pressure-sensitive styluses that
offer palm rejection capabilities. Users can also use passive styluses, though functionality may be
limited compared to active styluses.
What stylus features are available in the Cambridge Reader?
Cambridge Reader supports the following stylus features within the app experience:
- Navigation through the app.
- Text selection for annotation creation
- Handwritten notes when the note annotation pop-up is opened.
- Bookmark creation with stylus tap
- Search with handwritten text when the search option is activated
- Jump to the page with handwritten text when the jump pop-up is opened.
Common Troubleshooting Issues
The stylus is not responding in the app. What should I check first?
First, verify that the stylus works in other apps on the device. If it doesn't work elsewhere, the issue is
device-related, not app-specific. For app-specific issues:
1. Restart the Cambridge Reader app completely
2. Check if palm rejection is enabled in the app settings
3. Ensure the stylus battery is charged (for active styluses like Apple Pencil or S Pen)
4. Try removing and reconnecting the stylus in device settings
The text is not highlighted when using the stylus. How can this be
fixed?
1. Check that the correct annotation tool (pen, highlighter, or eraser) is selected
2. Verify sufficient pressure is being applied for pressure-sensitive styluses
The stylus creates unwanted marks when my palm comes into contact
with the screen. How do I prevent this?
This is a palm rejection issue that can be resolved by:
1. Checking that the device's native palm rejection is enabled
2. Adjusting the palm rejection sensitivity level
3. Using the stylus at a more upright angle to improve palm rejection detection
Will my annotations created through a stylus/Pen sync across
devices?
1. Allow the app to sync when the “sync confirmation” pop-up appears.
2. Check your internet connection if annotations aren't appearing on other devices.
Apple Pencil stops working mid-session. What causes this?
Apple Pencil disconnection can occur due to:
1. Low Apple Pencil battery (check battery level in iPad settings)
2. Bluetooth connectivity issues (try forgetting and re-pairing the pencil)
3. iOS background app refresh is affecting the connection
4. Palm rejection sensitivity conflicts
Samsung S Pen features aren't working in the app. How do I fix this?
For S Pen issues:
1. Verify the S Pen is properly seated in its slot
2. Check S Pen settings in Samsung device settings
3. Clear the S Pen cache through device settings
4. Restart the device to refresh S Pen connectivity
5. Update Samsung's S Pen software if available
