Accessing your digital coursebook or workbook in Cambridge Reader
Cambridge Reader is our platform for digital books, including Coursebooks, Workbooks, Teacher Resources and Digital Classroom.
It can be used online, or there is a Cambridge Reader app which allows you to read books offline.
In order to access your digital resource, you will need to activate it using an access code on the Cambridge GO website first before you attempt to access it through the Cambridge Reader app.
It is possible that your school has activated a licence on your behalf, in which case you should contact your teacher or submit your request.
Once activated, you will find your digital book on your Resources screen.
Cambridge Reader opens in a new browser window.
You will see the following features, described in more detail below.
The left-hand toolbar
Cambridge Reader has a number of generic controls in the left-hand menu. Not all of these are applicable to all products. See below for details on how to use each one:
Contents
The Contents button allows you to navigate to a particular point using the chapters or other structures in your book. You can scroll up and down the contents and expand and contract sections using the caret marks ^. Your location in the book is marked in green.
Bookmarks
Bookmarks help you navigate your book. You can leave a bookmark anywhere by using the button at the top right-hand side of the page.
Some of our titles allow you to bookmark from the bottom toolbar rather than the left-hand toolbar.
You can access a complete list of Bookmarks using the left-hand menu.
My activity
My Activity lists any annotations or links you have made to your book.
You can toggle between notes, weblinks and highlights using the smaller icons which appear beneath the left-hand toolbar.
You can jump to your notes, edit them, or delete them using these controls:
Media
The Media button opens a list of media assets (usually audio files) associated with your book.
You can jump to the location of the media item using the Go to arrow.
Glossary
Some of our titles have a handy built-in Glossary of key language and terms. This can be accessed from the left-hand toolbar and browsed alphabetically.
The right-hand toolbar
The right-hand toolbar controls how you view your digital resource at different sizes:
Switch to a single-page view
Switch back to the default double-page spread view
Pan around your page (only available once the page is zoomed)
Zoom into or out of the page.
This magnification feature is useful if you need to focus in on a particular part of the page.
Fit to screen. Your page will show at either its maximum width or height.
The bottom control bar
The bottom control bar has some variations depending on your product type, but generally covers:
Local reader settings
Local reader settings allow you to customise font and font size to suit your reading preferences.
Note that in our fixed-layout books (which exactly match the printed book), local reader settings are restricted to show/hide annotations.
Bookmark
Some of our titles allow you to bookmark from the bottom toolbar rather than the left-hand toolbar.
Full-screen mode
Full-screen mode allows you to view your book with no browser toolbars, maximising display size.
Note that your tools now appear on a floating toolbar which can be relocated by dragging.
You can close full-screen mode using the cross appearing at the top of the screen.
Page navigation
Page navigation allows you to control your movement between the next and previous page.
Some titles also allow you to navigate to a specific page by clicking on page number.
Making notes in your book
As you are reading, you may wish to add notes to your text. You can do this by selecting some of the text. A menu will open, allowing you to:
All of your notes can be accessed through the My Activity button in the left-hand toolbar.
Make a note
A textbox will open, allowing to make extensive notes.
Highlight
Highlights are made in transparent yellow.
Weblink
The weblink control allows you to link to external websites. Add a name label and a URL. If a preview is available it will appear as you create the link.
Hyperlink
Hyperlinks take you to another section in your book. Add a name label and use the menu to navigate to the appropriate section.
